Gammel Estrup Manor Garden

The garden has always been very important to Gammel Estrup The kitchen garden was an important part of the manor house’s larder, supplying the entire household with produce, while the ornamental garden played an important part in the aristocracy’s self-presentation. The well cared-for and lavishly blooming garden became a symbol of status, position and financial wealth. The garden was important for the manor’s operation and image, and thus the head gardener occupied a prestigious position and was among the highest paid employees at the manor.

Just as with architecture and furnishings, gardens also changed in tune with the fashions and trends of the time. In that spirit, the garden at Gammel Estrup is undergoing changes even today, so that it presents a living picture of a period in history in which there is room for new interpretations. Much of the garden consists of a baroque garden, which was last restored in 2002 with that intention. However, you can also experience carp ponds, orchards, herb garden and an oak grove and much, much more.
