East Funen

East Funen

East Funen

Susanne Vind, from the Romantic Garden at Sanderumgaard, suggests the following garden tour through her local region of East Funen.

Her tour would begin at the Romantic Garden at Sanderumgaard, where you can enjoy a historic, landscaped garden, featuring pavilions, canals, beautiful wooded glades, an orchard and a rose garden.

Lunch can be eaten at the large, well-stocked plant nursery of Langeskov Planteskole, which has a café serving delicious food.

The trip can then continue to Glorup Gods, a manor house with an impressive large garden in the romantic style. The garden is in the process of restoration and periodically features exhibitions or events.

From here, drive to the idyllic town of Kerteminde, to the Johannes Larsen Museum, where you can start with a cup of coffee and a piece of cake at its inviting café. Follow that with a walk in the authentic gardens around the museum, while admiring the permanent exhibitions or one of the numerous temporary exhibitions.

And, if you want to spoil yourself with a wonderful gastronomic experience, you can dine at the impressive Rudolf Mathis restaurant in Kerteminde.

Accommodation:
For an exceptional overnight stay, we recommend the Bed & Breakfast at Juelsberg Gods manor house near Nyborg, where guests stay in one of the side wings of the beautiful main building.

Hornsherred

Landscape architect Mette Rønne suggests the following garden tour in her home district of Hornsherred.

You can reach Hornsherred by road or on the S-train to Frederikssund station – why not bring a bike?

The day could start at the local museum, Færgegården, located at Færgelundsvej 1, DK-3630 Jægerspris Færgegården was the former ferryman’s cottage and boasts a beautiful garden with perennials and a small kitchen garden, primarily used by schools. The garden invites you to stay to eat and play.

The next stop on your tour could be Jægerspris Castle, at Slotsgården 20, DK-3630 Jægerspris. A walk through Jægerspris Castle’s park offers beautiful avenues, large areas with rhododendrons and you can find 18th century memorial stones by the sculptor Wiedewelt.

Enjoy lunch at Café Danner, located in the castle grounds.

The tour can then continue to Selsø Manor House, in an idyllic location by Roskilde Fjord. The remains of an impressive park can still be seen.

South Zealand/Møn

South Zealand/Møn

A tourist experience on South Zealand/Møn, in the vicinity of, and on the way to, Petersgaard.

A visit to South Zealand/Møn could start at Vordingborg by the Goose Tower, Denmark's best-preserved castle tower. The first castle was built around 1160, and the tower was held by King Valdemar Atterdag in the 1360s. Vordingborg Castle has been given a new life with the opening of the Danish Castle Centre, where you can learn about medieval castles, kings and power. The historic Botanical Garden is situated among the castle ruins, with its walled garden, low hedges and gazebo pergolas.

From here, we head to Møn and Liselund – one of Denmark's and Scandinavia's finest examples of romantic or "English" landscape gardening. Liselund is full of atmosphere, bringing together the entire world in the spirit of the time. The gardens are home to the tiny castle, which is the park's most famous landmark, as well as to other small buildings that were inspired by various architectural styles, including Norwegian and Chinese.

On the way there, make sure to visit Fanefjord Church, renowned for its many frescos. The church is the youngest of Møn's medieval stone churches and dates from the latter half of the 13th century. The current cross-vaulting is from the end of the 15th century, and the chancel originates from the beginning of the 16th century. In 1825, the Church was bought by the Klintholm  estate, and it remained in the estate's ownership for almost 100 years.

With its amazing Geocenter, Møns Klint is also not to be missed.

Bakkelund BB at Borre is a vibrant gallery, offering panoramas over the Baltic Sea, 3 minutes from Møns Klint. 20 artists and designers from Møn have decorated the house and its 16 rooms, and here you can experience the art and crafts that Møn offers as well as the local products.

Close up to Møns Klint, in Liselund Park, is “Liselund ny Slot” whose restaurant’s menu features organic and biodynamic foods, sourced locally wherever possible.
